PDP: Opposition party says 2017 budget is hopeless

Pulse Nigeria - Tue, 01/31/2017 - 02:00

“When the President was making his budget presentation at the National Assembly, his ministers were busy sleeping.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ebonyi state chapter, yesterday took a swipe at the 2017 budget presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that the budget lacked the potential to help Nigerians become self-reliant.

According to Today, while speaking with journalists in Abakaliki, the state’s party chairman, Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi, further noted that the 2017 budget is hopeless; stressing that 50 percent provision for debt services indicates that there is little or no attention to human capital development and infrastructural projects.

“When the President was making his budget presentation at the National Assembly, his ministers were busy sleeping; these old men are dragging the country backward.”

According to him, the President’s anti-corruption war was only targeted at intimidating and oppressing the opposition political parties in the country instead of being holistic, as reported by Today.

He further described the anti-corruption war as a mirage alleging that acts of corruption was obviously booming in APC-controlled states following its inability to pay workers salaries despite huge bailout funds released to them by the federal government.

Buhari: President is too old, he needs to give way to a younger man - Bishop Okah

Pulse Nigeria - Tue, 01/31/2017 - 02:00

Bishop Simeon Okah, the principal patriarch of the Flock of Christ Mission, Enerhen-Effurun, Delta State, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to forget about contesting in 2019.

Bishop Simeon Okah, the principal patriarch of the Flock of Christ Mission, Enerhen-Effurun, Delta State, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to forget about contesting in 2019.

Bishop Okah claimed that the president is already too old to pilot the affairs of the country. He also denounced President Buhari as the most unfavourable Nigerian President to the people of Niger Delta region.

“The man is an old man, old man is old, I am quite younger than he is. I am 64 years old, do you know that without the younger ones around me, there are some things about this generation that I cannot on my own understand because their way of thinking is very different from my way of thinking, not to talk of a man like Buhari?

First, Buhari is too old, secondly, he is not educated enough. It pains my heart that just because former President Goodluck Jonathan is from South-South, there was a general hatred against him by the north and maybe the west.

We, who travel, they were telling us that we were blessed to have a man who has PhD as a president, what does Buhari have apart from him being a general?” he said in an interview with Vanguard.

Bishop Okah disagreed with Rev. Ejike Mbaka who praised Buhari as the liberator of Nigerians.

Well, facts speak for themselves. What has he liberated, is it the economy, what? So when you say he is a liberator, what has he liberated?

Rather, he has worsened the state of everything in this country; he took over government when naira was between 170 and 190 to a dollar but today how much is it?" the Bishop asked.

When he was campaigning, he said he would make one naira to one dollar, but what is the position today, the man has destroyed almost everything he met, everything Jonathan labored for. Everything is nose-diving in the country.

Look at the stock exchange. He inherited a stock exchange of over N13 trillion. Today, it is about N8 to N9 trillion. What happened to N4 trillion?

It is people’s money, so to me, this government, particularly, in my own sense of judgment, there are too many lies and lies go with depression and depression goes with oppression.

People who are supposed to invest are asking questions, where are the blueprints for his economic programme.? Almost two years are gone, nothing. This is the very first time in our history that it took a president, who won an election over six months to appoint ministers.

And the people he appointed are the same corrupt people, who had to cross-carpet from PDP to APC; we thought he was going to bring angels from the moon the way he initially spoke about people that would make his cabinet, but finally, they were the same people that we knew in this country.

As a man from South-South, I feel very bad the way we have been treated. Look at the oil blocks too, how many belong to people from the South-South? in the first place, why should the Nigerian government consider giving oil blocks to individuals instead of state government?

Why should such huge amount of money go into hands of very few individuals? If we want to build a nation, these are questions that we need to ask,” the Bishop stated.

Saraki: What Nigerians should expect from N’Assembly in 2017

Pulse Nigeria - Tue, 01/31/2017 - 02:00

He further noted that the senators achieved more in the last three months than they did in the entire year, adding that the National Assembly is settling down.

The Senate president said the federal lawmakers would focus on making more laws that will promote the economy, enhance the budget process and support the fight against corruption.

According to Today, Dr. Saraki gave this indication while speaking with State House correspondents after his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja yesterday.

Saraki said: “In 2017, our attention will be on the economy because that is really a major issue for us as a country. We want to see some of the economic bills put forward passed, to see that there is greater improvement in the budget process in 2017, and to see that the government implements the budget early.”

“Also, one of our pet projects is made-in-Nigeria products. We want to see that government continues to support Nigerians in this area so that we can begin to cushion the difficult times Nigerians are going through.”

“So, next year is very important to us and I think, on the part of National Assembly, we will continue to give our support to ensure that the right things are done,” he said.

He further noted that the senators achieved more in the last three months than they did in the entire year, adding that the National Assembly is settling down and, as such, Nigerians would see many more bills passed for the president to assent, as reported by Today.

On the president’s signing of 17 bills into law, Saraki said, “It shows, in part, what we have been able to do in the National Assembly and there are many more bills to come and the president is also responding to them. You are going to see more of that in 2017; there are a lot of bills lined up.”

4 Feared Dead In Fresh Akwa Ibom, Cross River Communities Clash

360Nobs - 2 hours 55 min ago

Four people have been feared dead with scores injured in the renewed boundary crisis between Oku Iboku community in Akwa Ibom and Ikot Offiong in Cross River.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Bassey Essien Bassey, a former Vice Chairman of Itu Local Government Area, said that several persons sustained injuries while over 20 houses were burnt, including a filling station in the age-long communal conflict.

According to the former official, two security operatives were among those who lost their lives, forcing the military to deploy dozens of soldiers to the scene.

Bassey said that motorists and commuters along the Calabar-Itu highway were delayed for more than four hours until the arrival of security operatives to clear the road.

Also speaking, Ene Essien, a Community Leader in Oku Iboku, said that the latest incident occurred after series of attempts by the people to re-occupy the fishing area failed as they were forced out by the people of Oku Iboku.

He said: “The Ikot Offiong people are fishermen who migrated into our area from Akpabuyo in Cross River State to settle.

“After settling for so many years, they developed the instinct of seizing our land and even expanding more into Itu.”

The community leader added that their “uncomplimentary” relationship with the host community forced them to push them away from the fishing community.

“When they left our community, they settled at Odukpani, but the people also pushed them out of their place in Akpabuyo, because of their warring attitude,” he said.

Mr. Essien said the intractable conflict had lingered for years, leading to intermittent attacks by the invaders from Ikot Offiong.

According to him, the communal crisis started around the fishing area, but later escalated to the Calabar-Itu road when the people of Ikot Offiong returned in reprisal, leading to the death of four persons.

NAN gathered that the invaders returned with armed hoodlums in 11 buses and several flying boats.

It was gathered that they were later repelled by a combined team of soldiers, anti-riot police officers and officials of the State Anti-Robbery and Kidnapping Squad, SARS.

Aboutrika: Egypt Labels One Of Its Greatest Footballers Of All Time “A Terrorist”

360Nobs - 3 hours 8 min ago

An Egyptian criminal court has added ex-football star Mohamed Aboutrika to a terror list, his lawyer said on Tuesday, for alleged links to the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood group.

The Former Pharaohs of Egypt forward, who is considered one of the greatest football players in the country, is accused of financially supporting the Brotherhood, which Egypt considers a terrorist organisation.

Egypt has listed the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization and jailed thousands of its supporters since the military removed Islamist president Mohamed Mursi from office in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule.

A committee established to seize and manage Brotherhood properties and funds had previously frozen the former player’s assets.

Under the country’s anti-terrorism law, any person placed on a terror list is subject to a travel ban and faces having their passports and assets frozen.

Aboutrika’s lawyer Mohamed Osman said that the criminal court decision was “illegal” because his client “has not been convicted” in any criminal case, which is a precondition for placement on terror lists.

Aboutrika has denied supporting the Brotherhood, which maintains that it is peaceful, but was seen as supporting the former president’s election campaign in 2012.

Egypt, the Arab world’s most populous nation, is facing an increasingly violent insurgency in Northern Sinai, where the country’s most active militant group has pledged its allegiance to the militant group ISIS.

The country’s current terror list contains over 1500 names, including top Brotherhood leaders convicted of violent crime.

These include Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi; organisation chief Mohamed Badie; owner of the Juhayna dairy company, businessman Safwan Thabet; Chairman of the Islamist Wasat Party Abul Ela Mady and his deputy among others.
